Noor Husin, born 3 March 1997 in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, is a professional footballer whose journey to Southend United is as inspiring as it is historic.

It is hard to imagine a more difficult start to life. For the first 18 months of Noor Husin’s childhood, his home city of Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan was caught up in devastating conflict. By the age of five, his family had fled the country and sought safety in England, determined to build a new future. For Noor, football quickly became both a passion and a pathway.

Husin began his youth career at Reading, before moving to Crystal Palace in 2016. In January 2017, he joined Accrington Stanley on loan, and on 4 February 2017, he made history – becoming the first Afghan player to appear in the English Football League, scoring on his debut against Notts County.

After spells with Notts County, Stevenage, and Dartford, Husin signed for Southend United in January 2022. Since then, he has become a key figure in midfield, known for his composure, vision, and work ethic. As of August 2025, he has made 134 appearances, scoring 8 goals for the Shrimpers.

🌍 Representation and Impact

Husin’s presence in English football is groundbreaking. As a refugee turned professional, and the first Afghan to play in the EFL, he represents hope and possibility for underrepresented communities. He has earned 20 caps for Afghanistan, proudly wearing the national shirt and inspiring young players across the diaspora.

His story is now part of Southend United’s heritage – an example of football’s power to transcend borders and build belonging. Husin once said:

“Football gave me a future. I want to show others that anything is possible.”

Through his performances and his presence, Noor Husin continues to make history – not just for Afghanistan, but for Southend, and for every young fan who sees themselves in his journey.
