You can now have that Roots Hall Friday night-under-the-lights feeling in your own home!
The club are embarking on a programme to upgrade the floodlights at Roots Hall, which includes replacement of all 88 of the existing lamps on all four pylons. These are being made available by the club to the Southend United History Group, and some will be retained by that Group for future display purposes. However, the significant majority are being offered to fans to purchase, and all proceeds will be allocated to the Southend United History Group.
The History Group has as its principal objective the protection and celebration of our club’s history, and a number of projects are already underway to that effect. By way of example, the Group recently purchased some second-hand cabinets from AFC Wimbledon with the aim of using these to create memorabilia displays at Roots Hall.
The bulbs from the lamp casings will be removed and disposed of as they contain hazardous material. It is understood that there are two main types of lamp casing – a square one (for the penalty areas) and a circular one. They are all 34-years-old, have a width of circa 40 cm, and weigh no more than 25 kg.
Based on discussions with another club who had a similar situation, and initial soundings with fans, we have set a price of £100 per lamp casing. It will not be possible to specify whether you want a round or a square one.
Currently it is anticipated that work to replace the lamps will commence in February 2026, but this is dependent upon a number of factors including the weather. Once they have been taken down and the bulbs removed, they will be ready for collection from Roots Hall – it will not be possible to post them or temporarily store them. Collection date options over a short period will be set once the lamp casings are ready.
Once paid for and collected, the lamps will be entirely the responsibility of the purchaser and the seller does not accept any ongoing liability for their future handling or use. No refunds will be permitted.

At this stage we just wish to gauge interest, which should be registered by email only, to suepassoc@gmail.com specifying how many lamp casings you are interested in purchasing (maximum of two per person). Once we know when the lamp casings will be ready we will contact you, in strict order of date/time your interest is registered, with details for payment and collection. We will advertise further on SUEPA social media if at that point any further lamp casings remain available.
This is an exciting opportunity for fans to acquire a little bit of something that has made our Roots Hall so iconic, as well as helping work to continue to protect our history and heritage and make it accessible for the enjoyment of all. We are grateful to our club for letting us have this opportunity.
