WHO PUT THE BALL IN THE BURY NET?
Perhaps it’s the most loved Roots Hall terrace chant question ever. And, of course, we all know the answer: Ian Benjamin.
It was Saturday 4th May 1991. The Shrimpers had never reached the second tier of the Football League, and indeed had rarely come close to it, but Dave Webb’s army were on the march. Promotion from Division Four had been secured the previous season in the final match at Peterborough, and that form had just carried on in to the 1990/91 campaign. Three games from the end, the opportunity to secure a second successive step up was there for the taking at Gigg Lane … all that was needed was a win.
It was a nervy affair, and then just before the end of the first half Pat Scully scythed down a Bury attacker and was sent-off. It looked as though the promotion champagne would have to be put on ice for another match. But then, on 83 minutes, Andy Ansah broke down the right, knocked the ball into the box for Ian Benjamin who, with his back to goal and (to quote commentator John Adams) “with a shimmy, a shot … oh my word it’s there!”. The travelling Shrimpers behind the goal went wild, and we then hung on to secure the dream promotion.

That moment, and many more besides, will be relived in our next SUEPA ‘Evening with’ event, as Ian Benjamin himself will be our main guest at what is sure to be another great occasion, hosted as ever by the always entertaining Glenn Pennyfather. And that’s not all, a number of Benji’s teammates will also be there – Andy Ansah, Steve Tilson and Paul Clark are amongst those who have said they will aim to be there.
We are also delighted this time to be hosting the event at the newly refurbished Shrimpers Bar at Roots Hall. It will be on Saturday 28th February 2026, arrival from 7.00 pm with a 7.30 pm start. Tickets are priced just £20 and that includes a half-time pizza snack.
Our ‘Evening With’ events have always proved to be extremely popular and have sold out in the past – we expect no different this time. You can secure your ticket(s) HERE
Once purchased your ticket will be emailed to you, typically within one week of purchase. If you have any questions, please contact SUEPA via email at: suepassoc/gmail.com

We look forward to seeing you there.
